The New Wharf: once all ropes, rickety timber, and craypots that smelled like hard work. Now it’s modern, sleek, and anchored by a building you can’t miss—like it or not. The salty air keeps things honest. Kaikōura’s always had the looks; now Wakatu Quay is pulling its weight.
Kaikōura sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Seaward Kaikōura Ranges, a place shaped by light, sea, and mountains. The landscape is raw, rugged, and always changing as the sun moves over it.
Film photography suits this place. Its simplicity matches the unpredictable light and colour that define Kaikōura.
The Kaikōura Project is created here. Photos are shot on film, then developed and printed in a small studio that looks out over the sea. The scans are not retouched for print. The pictures remain honest, unpolished, and as changeable as the place itself.
