Kaikōura is busy in the autumn – very busy. Tourists flock to town, cramming in as many experiences as they can before heading home to the Northern Hemisphere for summer and Easter is the last New Zealand break before winter; bach owners, Kaikōura fans and visitors travelling through town fill the cafes, restaurants, bars and accommodation to the brim.
Not so during the Covid-19 lockdown of March and April 2020. New Zealand was a ghost town, businesses were closed and the streets were empty. When walking or biking for our daily exercise, Kaikōura felt like an untouched paradise that could be enjoyed at leisure.
I was inspired to start a project to capture this time in our history. It was a little déjà vu, having been cut off from the world by an earthquake at the end of 2016, but this time it was different for the lack of close community connection. It felt empty – there were empty spaces.
In the fridge, I have a stash of film slowly expiring waiting for projects that never start. There seems to never be time for personal projects, but now I had the chance to make time and film was perfect for this project; A look at a unique time using a timeless medium.
Pictures are made with a medium format Mamiya RZ67 Pro II and 65 mm lens. The film is Kodak Ektar 100, expired 10 years plus. Home developed using a simplified C-41 developing kit. Scanned with an Epson V800 scanner using Silverfast software. Minor white balance correction to the image files at scanning with no retouching, all the beauty of film is retained.
