As summer approaches, the town begins to shift. Visitors arrive, routines change, and familiar places take on a different rhythm.
These pictures follow a quiet wander through Kaikōura at the start of the holiday season, as it begins to get busier.

Late summer in Kaikōura means show day — dust on boots, kids laughing on rides, stock trucks rumbling in early, the smell of hot dogs and chips in the air, familiar faces everywhere. The Show is rural life on display, plain and simple.

For over 50 years, this was a working space — boats tying up, cray bins stacked, mussels and fish processed here.

By 2020, it was on the way out.
Not long after, it was gone.

During a rare period of stillness, familiar places appeared empty. Roads, infrastructure, and in-between spaces are shown as they were — quiet, unused, and waiting.
